When I learned about plate tectonics in school my mind was captivated by the Juan de Fuca Plate. All the other ones had these big general names (eg, North American Plate) but this small, very active one on the coast was named for someone! “What did that person do to have such an honor? Were they a good person? What is that area like?”. Your pictures are like finding a pressed tree leaf in an old book and being transported to another time.
